STATE POLICE? GOD FORBID!!

February 13
04:04:51 2018
It is reported that all the 36 State Governors of the Federation have unanimously endorsed the creation of State Police by law. I am not surprised. The Nigerian Politicians may always show a semblance of fight to divide the poor and the gullible on trivialities bordering on religion, section or tribe to further their grip on power, but will always act in unison when it comes to manipulating money and power for their personal and selfish advantage. That is where you see "unity" in its excellence being displayed.

I am worried that the report indicated a tacit support from the Presidency as well. State Police? We'll definitely be dammed if that ever happens in our dear country! If historical facts are anything to go by, then we must resist this latest attempt on the onslaught of our freedom, peace and progress as a people. I will hate to see this debate culminating into reality for many reasons.

Under this trial of democracy from 1999, we have seen where ethnic and religious clashes have left many Governors implicit and neck deep in the unholy happenings. At a point in time, a democratic President had to declare a state of emergency in Plateau state for finding equally democratically elected Governor openly and expressly implicated in a serially bloody upheavals in that erstwhile cool and peaceful state. The President had to appoint a retired Military General to bring normalcy to that State.

Most of these democratic Governors are susceptible to total manipulation of other people's responsibilities which increases in intensity over time. Significantly, they have successfully manipulated their respective cabinets, appointing and sacking them at will. The Commissioners no longer have powers to award contracts or run their ministries independently. In certain instances, we hear of Commissioners not able to award as low as a N50,000 contract! Everything is done from the Government House, while the Commissioners serve as rubber stamp to justify each action on behalf of their respective ministries.

Worst in this regard is that equally democratically elected Local Government Councils have not been spared from the clutches of manipulative tendencies of our State Governors. Their monthly and other monetary allocations from the Federation Account is always conered by the State Governors who use them on their behalf as they deem fit. Most of our Governors, since 1999, have become extremely selfish and manipulative.

In this sense, the State Governors sometimes decide not to hold local govt elections but will simply appoint utterly undemocratic caretaker councils who will sit put on their instructions to the latter. They have, (by the same feat they are pursuing State Police) succeeded in having State Independent Electoral Commissions by law to ensure democratic process in producing periodic leadership at the third tier of Government. But the Governors more or less turn thus organ into a mill for total victory for their own Political Party; and that is only when they feel magnanimous and democratically conscious enough to conduct the elections at all. Some Governors never held the elections even once!

These are the hard facts about the democratically elected State Governors we have had from 1999 to date. These are the same people asking for a Police they will recruit and fund. One is then left to imagine how well the Police can function justly and effectively under leaders with these tendencies for selfish manipulation of of money and power. We must resist this latest attempt at creating state police in our various states, otherwise we'll soon begin to live under a real police state!
